Background Story – Why aThemes?
In our annual WPBeginner reader survey, one of the user suggestions that we always get is to build a FREE WordPress theme that makes it easy to create stunning websites.
Now, as you know, my focus has entirely been on building our WordPress plugins and software products, which are now used by over 30 million websites (thanks to your support). But I simply couldn’t ignore this request from the WPBeginner community.
While we offer ThriveThemes (a premium suite of theme builder and WordPress growth plugins) and SeedProd AI theme builder (a premium tool that creates a site in seconds), we didn’t have a good free WordPress theme option.
So I started talking to some of my friends, and then Charlie Livingston, the founder of aThemes, reached out about potentially looking to exit the business. After a few short conversations, we signed the deal because it aligned with both of our visions.
Charlie wanted the business to go in the hands of someone reputable and who has a proven track record of building great products.
I knew our readers wanted us to build a free theme, and we had already been recommending the Sydney theme in our various articles because it’s a very high-quality theme.

Our work is just starting.
My goal is to create the best WordPress themes on the market while keeping them affordable and accessible to everyone. We have an exciting roadmap ahead that focuses on bringing premium-quality designs at a price point that makes sense for small business owners.
